Postby TimM » Sun Sep 20, 2009 11:34 am

If you were to put together a Top 10 list of your favorite anime, what would make the cut and why?

Leave your top 10 below with commentary. I'll be compiling the results along with my own top 10 for an article on my site.

Can't say I'm all that well versed in anime culture these days, but here is my essential list:

Neon Genesis Evangelion - the coolest sci fi anime ever
Martian Successor Nadesico - good comedy, good drama, great characters
Slayers - deep story and D&D feel
Revolutionary Girl Utena - creepy and unusual, great characters (black rose saga, ftw)
Serial Experiments Lain - very philosophical, bland characters but still a fav
Excel Saga - Funniest anime ever
Ghost in the Shell - I like the characters in NGE better, but this one is a close second
Kodocha - Funny in the same respect as Excel Saga (I think the same voice actress). I spent many a carefree saturday watching this show.
Ranma - This one takes me back. It's one of the first animes I've ever seen, and if they come out with a Ranma anthology on DVD or BluRay, I'll probably be the first one to buy it. The fight scenes are what make this show.
Trigun - I can't say enough good things about this show.
Cowboy Bebop - Great in the same way Trigun is, but slower paced.
Yakitate Japan - LMAO

Yeah, I know, it's 12 long, but I can't bear to part with any of them on the list. Maybe if I had to, I would take off Lain and Slayers.

In no order:

Samurai Champloo - Swords and Hip Hop. Nujabes.

UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie - Moe, Moe, Moe. Pedophilia. Tits.

XXXholic - Awesomeness all around.

Chobits - CHII!!!!!

Rosario+Vampire - More fetishes than 4chan, in an awkward amusing kind of way. Also, Vampire girl kicks asses every episode.

Shigurui: Death Frenzy - Hard to follow, too much evisceration to not watch.

FLCL - A fun, light hearted, short series.

Darker Than Black - Some people have superpowers, but have to pay a price to use them.

Mahoromatic - Assassin robot quits assassinating in order to be a maid for a young boy. Tits and explosions.

K-ON! - High school girls play rock music. Moe to death.

Now, these are only series I have FINISHED that I liked. I also suggest RomeoxJuliet, Burst Angel, Haibane Renmei, Lucky Star, Samurai 7 , Vampire Princess Miyu, Zero no Tsukaima, Haruhi Suzumiya.

How could I not include Escaflowne?! Don't let the overly bishonen appearance fool you, it's a classic series, easily one of the 90's best. Along with the sometimes teen oriented but also epic drama, there's plenty of badasses, steampunk-ish fantasy, and an AMAZING soundtrack by Yoko Kanno. Some people have a hard time getting past the exaggerated Noboteru Yuki character designs (they hate the noses).

The movie version's good too, and still one of the most beautiful anime films IMO. It condenses the story greatly, alters a few elements...worth seeing and behind a higher budget but overall not nearly as grand as the show.

Holy fuck also mine. After watching it, almost every character I played on PBEMs was loosely based on Shocking Alberto.

Ive been looking for GR for, quite honestly, years. Do you know where I can get it? and also, after I watch it, wanna do a track with me about it?

not much of an otaku, only cared for 2 anime shows: cowboy bebop and FLCL
cowboy bebop b/c it has good scene direction, solid storylines that range from deep to fun, characters that evolve w/ each other but still stay the same, amazing music that I listen to by itself, and short w/ only 2 seasons so it stays fresh.

FLCL b/c it's super short and is straddles insanity in that clever way where you both think you can figure it out and not care to figure it out at the same time. also, amazing music.

most other animes fall into the trap of being too long and japanime shows have a tendency to be extremely long winded and boring; rarely getting to the point. this is why these are the top of the crop.
Hey dude its me I killed a cat, you can look at me smile, but you cant listen to me rap.
